First Mission

22

Two months after we joined together to form our new team, Canyon was making our two-bedroom condo a slice of heaven with the smells from his fantastic cooking.

Both Sims and I had started making it a habit to sit at the kitchen counter. We would just sit there and talk and watch Canyon cook.

It was like a dance of beauty as far as we were concerned.

And his sense of humor kept us all laughing at the same time.

Another real nice thing about having him there was that he was alive and could touch things and move them. Until Canyon moved in with us, we had a wonderful living area of soft couches and chairs with a television on the wall that we seldom turned on because it was just far too much work.

Neither one of us were real good at pushing a button on a remote. How sad was that?

Not a great deal annoyed us about being dead, but that one detail did and we worked on it all the time. Both Sims and I really needed to learn how to touch real physical things, make them move just a little. Not only would it come in handy at times when we were trying to save someone, but for real-life-things like turning on a light switch or a television.

But since we had both been dead a very short time, we were told by Jewel that the touching skill was still in our future.

Now, on normal days, I was the last person awake of our little team of superheroes and ghosts. Canyon was always gone, off at work in his expensive, tailored suits, when I came staggering out of bed to get my coffee.

And Sims would have gone out on her own a few times as well. Once I got my sorry ass moving, Sims and I then worked together in the afternoon and early evening. Then we would spend time at home together with Canyon for dinner. Then after both Canyon and Sims were off to bed, I headed out for a late-night patrol.

This morning, expecting no one to be in the kitchen when I came staggering out, I was surprised to see both Sims and Canyon sitting at the kitchen counter sipping coffee.

And neither of them had on their happy face.

But wow did the kitchen smell wonderful of coffee, maybe the richest smell I had had the pleasure to experience. Usually Sims just brought me a cup of coffee from a nearby coffee shop. But this morning Canyon had brewed some fresh.

I had started wearing a bathrobe to the kitchen for my pre-shower coffee after Canyon moved in, so as I poured a cup, I said, “I suppose I really shouldn’t ask.”

“Get your shower and your coffee,” Sims said. “Then we’ll talk over your breakfast and our lunches.”

Canyon nodded. “We ran into a situation that will take all three of us to deal with.”

That was a first. I nodded and turned to head back to the bedroom with my coffee mug in my hand.
